The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential is administered by American Institute of Certified Public Accountant (AICPA) the world’s largest member association representing the accounting profession, with more than 412,000 members in 144 countries.
CPA is the highest standard of competence in the field accountancy across globe. CPA’s are the trusted financial advisor, who helps individuals, businesses, and other organizations plan and reach their financial goals.
The process of becoming CPA starts with one’s previous education, where State Board of Accountancy requires the minimum of 150 semester hours in most states and a specified number of accounting hours (in the 150 total) depending on state or jurisdiction.
The candidates from India should be at least holding Bachelor / Associate Degree in Commerce / Accounting. Candidates with B. Com, CA, CS, ICWA, M. Com, MBA Finance (i.e.) with minimum 15 years of education are eligible to sit for CPA examination.
According to the CPA Examination Mission Statement, the purpose of the Exam is “To admit individuals into the accounting profession only after they have demonstrated the entry-level knowledge and skills necessary to protect the public interest in a rapidly changing business and financial environment. “ The CPA Examination is computer-based format that consists of four sections.
This section covers knowledge of auditing procedures, generally accepted auditing standards and other standards related to attest engagements, and the skills needed to apply that knowledge.
This section covers knowledge of general business environment and business concepts that candidates need to know in order to understand the underlying business reasons for and accounting implications of business transactions, and the skills needed to apply that knowledge.
This section covers knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles for business enterprises, not-for-profit organizations, and governmental entities, and the skills needed to apply that knowledge.
This section covers knowledge of federal taxation, ethics, professional and legal responsibilities, and business law, and the skills needed to apply that knowledge.
The Certified CPA candidate is an applicant for a CPA License. However, many states require the candidate to have 1 – 2 years experience under a CPA with additional requirements that varies by the candidate’s existing education, employer(s) and type of work to grant the license.
The CPA License gives the right to practice public accounting.
In addition to other requirements, some states require candidates to complete an open-book ethics examination to be eligible for CPA License.
